Week 9 Fantasy Football: A Run-Heavy Week 8 Raises New Questions

Week 8 produced a sharp change in the fantasy football environment: rushing volume rose while passing output fell, and turnovers helped keep scoring down. That combination makes the move into Week 9 worth watching. One low-output week doesn’t establish a lasting trend, but it does put a premium on understanding where production came from—and on setting lineups around an unusually early Sunday kickoff.

Week 8 tilted toward the ground

Teams averaged 206.2 passing yards apiece, the lowest weekly figure of the season. The league also reached season highs in interception rate, at 2.8%, and sack rate, at 8.1%. Passing accounted for 62.8% of total yardage, its smallest share of the season.

Rushing moved in the opposite direction: offenses averaged 122.0 yards per game, the highest weekly mark so far. That additional ground production didn’t translate into a more productive scoring week. Offenses failed to earn a first down on 35.5% of possessions, also a season high. The third-down conversion rate was 36.8%, the second-lowest of the year.

The turnovers tell an important part of the story. Teams gave the ball away on 12.7% of possessions, the highest rate of the season, while average scoring was 1.93 points per possession, the third-lowest figure. For fantasy managers, the figures describe a week when extra rushing yardage could coexist with stalled drives and fewer chances to finish possessions with points. The distinction matters: total yardage alone can make an offense look more productive than its scoring opportunities suggest.

What to monitor in Week 9

The schedule brings two immediate lineup considerations. The Bengals and Falcons meet in Spain on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. ET, giving their players an earlier start than the rest of the Sunday slate. That kickoff makes timing part of the decision: check those players before the first game begins, rather than waiting until the usual Sunday afternoon lineup routine.

Only the Titans and Steelers are on bye, limiting the number of players unavailable because of the schedule. Managers should still account for those absences when making final lineup choices. With eight weeks complete and many fantasy regular seasons approaching their stretch run, each week’s available options can have a sharper effect on roster decisions.

The approaching NFL trade deadline is another variable to follow. The source reports that activity has already taken place and that additional moves could come this week. A trade can alter a player’s role or the opportunities available to teammates, so any confirmed change may warrant a fresh look at the affected lineups. Until a move is known, though, there’s no basis for assuming a particular player’s workload will change.

Week 8’s league-wide passing struggles also raise a useful question for the coming slate: will offenses return to more efficient aerial production, or will rushing remain the steadier source of yardage? The available figures don’t answer that on their own. Matchups and individual roles still need to be considered game by game, which is why the accompanying previews and weekly player rankings can add detail beyond the broad league averages.

Week 9 game schedule

Rich Hribar’s The Worksheet is a weekly, game-by-game fantasy preview covering notable players across the NFL slate. The matchups begin Thursday night, with Jacksonville visiting Baltimore. Sunday’s early window includes Cincinnati against Atlanta in Spain, followed by a full set of afternoon games; Tampa Bay visits Chicago on Sunday night, and Buffalo travels to Minnesota on Monday night.

The previews are intended to be read alongside the weekly rankings, with updates throughout the week when significant news or player availability changes affect the slate. After a week defined by inefficient passing, stalled possessions and elevated turnovers, the useful focus is on each matchup’s player roles and scoring chances. Then set the early-game lineups before Sunday morning and revisit the remaining decisions as the week’s news develops.
