Chris Simms Turns Panthers’ 43-13 Loss Into a Sharp Revenge Tour
Carolina’s victory over Philadelphia prompted a social media jab at Simms. A 43-13 defeat by Tampa Bay gave him the perfect reply.

Carolina’s 43-13 loss to Tampa Bay handed Chris Simms a neatly timed opening: one week after the Panthers celebrated beating the team he had backed, they were overwhelmed by a 1-5 Buccaneers squad tied to the biggest part of his playing career. Simms took the opportunity on Monday’s PFT Live to aim a blistering on-air reply at Carolina and its social media crew.
The exchange began before Week 6, when Simms picked Philadelphia as one of his upset calls on Chris Simms Unbuttoned, the NBC podcast he hosts with Connor Rogers. The Eagles were preparing to use backup Tanner McKee after Jalen Hurts was sidelined by blood clots first detected before Philadelphia’s loss to Jacksonville in London. Doctors had deemed the clots stable enough for Hurts to play that game; within a week, he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and multiple clots in his lungs, ending his season.
Philadelphia’s handling of Hurts’ health drew scrutiny, and the league was reportedly “furious” about the situation. Simms’ prediction rested on a different part of the matchup: he expected Carolina to return from its bye sluggish, while Philadelphia’s defense could turn the game into a low-scoring, physical contest.
“This is one of my upsets of the week here. Little bit of just a gut feeling about the culture in Philadelphia,” Simms said. “Everything they deal with. They are tough. We always say that Nick Sirianni is tough. That defense is still special. I’m going to go 17-14. Eagles get the win.”
Philadelphia didn’t win. Carolina left Lincoln Financial Field with the victory, moving to 3-2 and first place in the NFC South. The Panthers’ social media team quickly marked the result with a post: “Cuckoo birds szn.”

That was a fair moment for Carolina to enjoy a win over a team Simms had backed. The trouble, as he framed it, was the timing of the celebration. The Panthers had a week to savor the result, then faced the Buccaneers at home and lost by 30 points. That sharp swing gave Simms the chance to turn the social media jab back on its authors.
He opened Monday’s show by asking whether Carolina had mistaken its winning week for a bye. Simms mocked the team’s confidence after beating what he called a third-string quarterback, and stressed that the Eagles had been dealing with an unusually difficult situation. He also pointed out that Carolina needed a fourth-quarter push to finish the game.
“Carolina Panthers, after you’re 3-and-2 and you’re in first place in the division and you’re talking s— on social media, did you think you had a bye week? Where were you yesterday?” Simms said. “Puffing out their chest like, ‘Oh gosh, we went into Philadelphia and beat a third-string quarterback while they were dealing with the most dysfunctional situation in football that week. Look at us, we’re amazing, and we had to squeak it out in the fourth quarter to do it.’”

Simms didn’t revisit the part of his forecast that had gone wrong: he had chosen Philadelphia, and Carolina had beaten the Eagles. Instead, he focused on the scale of the Panthers’ defeat and the contrast with their online swagger. He called them “wussy cats” and described the Tampa Bay result as “as big a butt whooping as we’ve seen in any game the whole year.”
Then he went further. “I mean, the 1-and-5 Buccaneers come to town and just, I mean, you guys laid down. You didn’t even lay down like some cats,” he said. “You laid down like some damn street dogs.” He closed the segment by singing, “Yo ho, yo ho, the pirate’s life for me,” a nod to his former team.
The score leaves Carolina at 3-3, with time to answer the criticism on the field. Simms’ point was less about whether one bad loss defines the Panthers than about how quickly confidence can look misplaced when the next result goes the other way. The Panthers beat the team he picked, then lost heavily to a Tampa Bay side that had entered the game 1-5. Their next performances will decide whether the Philadelphia win was a sign of progress or a moment they celebrated too soon.
