Michael Chandler’s WWE Debut Sends Him Across the Ring—and Opens a New Path
Chandler stepped into NXT as a guest referee, then got shoved across the ring. The cameo adds weight to questions about his future in wrestling and MMA.

Michael Chandler’s first WWE appearance put him in the middle of the action. Serving as special guest referee for an NXT match, the former UFC lightweight title challenger tried to intervene between Dion Lennox and Cruz Montana—and Lennox shoved him across the ring. Chandler got back to his feet for a tense face-off, leaving a small but clear opening for a future wrestling storyline.
The cameo also arrives at a consequential point in Chandler’s fighting career. His knockout loss to Mauricio Ruffy in June was his sixth defeat in eight UFC fights, and he has since reached a four-fight losing streak. Those results sharpen the question of whether he’ll continue competing in MMA or commit more time to the wrestling opportunity he has discussed.
A referee role with a physical twist
Chandler’s assignment was to referee the “unsanctioned match” between Lennox and Montana on November 4. He wasn’t simply an observer: when he moved to step in as Lennox worked Montana in a corner, Lennox sent him the length of the ring. Chandler recovered, and the two men squared up.
That exchange gave the appearance a distinct hook. A guest referee can connect a visiting athlete to a match without requiring them to compete, but Chandler’s physical involvement brought him into the action and put a possible next chapter on screen. The face-off suggested a story could follow, though the appearance itself doesn’t confirm that Chandler will wrestle again or take on a full-time role.
WWE shared footage of the moment, captioning it: “Dion Lennox just SWATTED @MikeChandlerMMA away!!” The brief clip captured the sharpest beat of the night: Chandler steps in, Lennox knocks him aside, and the referee is suddenly part of the scene.
Wrestling interest has been building
This wasn’t the first sign of a possible crossover. Chandler said in the summer of 2025 that he had held talks with WWE boss Triple H. He has also teased a future in professional wrestling, making the NXT appearance a visible step in a possibility he had already raised.
Chandler’s appeal in that setting is easy to understand. He’s known for his energy on the microphone and for producing memorable moments in his Octagon interviews. Those traits can carry across to wrestling, where a performer has to make an impression in short exchanges as well as in the ring. The NXT appearance offered a first look at how that persona might fit into a scripted wrestling setting, while leaving the scale of any longer-term involvement unresolved.
There’s a relevant precedent among combat sports names who have appeared in WWE. Brock Lesnar and Ronda Rousey built successful wrestling careers after their work in MMA, while Daniel Cormier has also served as a special guest referee. Their paths show that a crossover can take different forms; they don’t establish what Chandler’s own role will be.
Two careers, one unanswered decision
Chandler’s UFC run is in a difficult stretch: the Ruffy defeat brought his record across his last eight UFC fights to six losses, and the four-fight skid leaves little room to ignore the recent results. His willingness to keep competing remains a separate question from his interest in WWE. This appearance offers evidence of a wrestling opportunity, not a confirmed retirement or a commitment to leave MMA.
That distinction matters. A guest referee spot can be a one-off, a way to test a crossover, or the start of a recurring role. Chandler has not been confirmed for a match of his own, and no full WWE schedule has been announced in the source material. For now, the strongest signal is that he has taken a public step into the wrestling world while his future in the Octagon is under scrutiny.
The next clue will be whether WWE brings him back and gives him a larger part to play. If that happens, the face-off with Lennox gives the appearance a ready-made thread to pick up. If it doesn’t, Chandler will still have made his debut in a role that put his personality and physical presence on display. Either way, the NXT moment has made his next career decision harder to treat as a distant possibility.
